Working sound cards on Arch Linux Duke GenuineIntel (kernel: 2.6.21-ARCH) by mildred593 (5):

The PCM controller is not available at startup… You’ll have to play a sound (it seems) to makes it appear.

Working sound cards on Debian 4.0 i386 (kernel: 2.6.21.1) by squirrel (-3):

Playback works perfectly, can’t quite get recording to work properly though. Could just be a Mac issue.

Working sound cards on Gentoo Gentoo Base System release 1.12.10 GenuineIntel (kernel: 2.6.23-gentoo-r5) by thebigear (5):

with kernel >= 2.6.22

Working sound cards on Debian lenny/sid i386 (kernel: 2.6.24-1-686) by alexissoft (-3):

The sound output has sometimes (yes sometimes, it’s a random failure—on ALL kernels ALL distributions) a very noisy output on the left channel (LEFT only).

Very disturbant, the soundcard is almost useless when the problem arrives.
