Madwifi does not support it yet, so ndiswrapper is necessary.

Needs the non-free Atheros binary driver installed or madwifi.

Contrary to anything else you'll read, it works beautifully with the madwifi drivers. Kudos to the madwifi developers. You get detailed information using any of the iw software, and it works great with all encryption schemes. Don't use ndiswrapper, because you don't need to, and it will gobble up CPU. I think 802.11-whatever is a lousy, insecure, unreliable technology for what it's being used for nowadays. Boycott it under all operating systems so people make better stuff. For me, wireless on laptops is part of a hidden cost, kind of like Windows: almost unavoidable on the x86 architecture, mostly useless, and too costly. I would like to find a modern laptop without wireless. The people who run this site shouldn't have to be troubled with wireless issues.
