It worked only with the fglrx drivers and some modifications to the xorg.conf in order to disable aiglx (activated by default in Ubuntu 7.04) and the composite extensions (not supported by fglrx).
Composite desktops (beryl, Compiz, etc.) do work, but only with XGL (due to fglrx which does not support composite extensions)
Eventually, glxgears returns about 1300 fps, and quite the double with XGL.
I had to change the driver in xorg.conf to vesa in order to boot the livecd (X.org would not boot otherway), and thus install Ubuntu. I had to do the same at first boot, and then install fglrx to get the card fully supported (resolution superior than 1024×768, etc…).
Impossible to have a good configuration with ATI drivers.
3D puts a fuzzy screen with no way to select anything
