you still need the restricted drivers for this to work properly under ubuntu. low resolution from the fresh install. no info on video playback in fullscreen

Works with fglrx drivers.
But when I decided to improve the perfomance of 3D operations and work with 3D applications and effects in KDE (transparency effect etc), the solution was to install latest ATI drivers:
x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.42.3.
Now I use ati-drivers-8.433
