The HP 10xx printers do not contain non-volatile flash. When the printer turns on, it requires the firmware is sent by the computer. On windows, the driver handles this, though not incredibly well.
A little bit of setup (a couple of commands in the terminal) is required to to set this up on Ubuntu, but unlike on XP the printer never misses a beat once set up.
