3D intesive games such as Counter-Strike Condition-Zero and Counter-Strike Source worked only with the “fglrx” ATI’s propietary binary driver.
Cedega works quite well with this driver.

You can get it directly at ATI’s website or by

emerge ati-drivers

I have tested XGL/AIGLX a time ago, it worked pretty good with some tweaking. After i reinstalled my system when my disk broke i have not tested it again.
It’ deactivated for now. But i will try again when i have some time and posts the results in here.

Tips:

  • In order to have the module loaded at boot add “fglrx” to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.
  • If you’re using Gentoo make dependencies work for you and add “VIDEO_CARDS=“radeon vesa fglrx” to /etc/make.conf, and recompile Xorg.
  • If you are using gentoo you can have the latest version of “fglrx” by unmasking in /etc/portage/package.keywords

The basic functionality works if you use the standard Xorg “vesa” driver.

If you use the Xorg’s “radeon” driver you can even play some linux 3D games like 3DTux and other less intensive 3D applications, such as ScummVM and other videogame emulators.
